Chrome peeling is not a mystery. It is the result of skipped steps in a plating process that has more stages than most buyers realize. A bathroom faucet that looks shiny on day one and starts flaking by month six did not fail randomly. It was never properly plated to begin with.

Electroplating chrome onto brass or steel is a multi-layer process. The base metal goes through degreasing, acid pickling, and activation before it ever touches a plating bath. Then comes a copper layer for adhesion, a nickel layer for corrosion resistance, and finally a thin chrome layer on top for hardness and shine. Each layer needs its own bath, its own current density, and its own timing. Cut corners on any of these and the layers will not bond properly.

The copper layer is where cheap plating cuts first. Copper fills micro-scratches and creates a smooth foundation for nickel and chrome. Skip the copper, or apply it too thin, and the nickel has nothing to grip. The nickel layer does the heavy lifting against rust. A proper nickel layer is 8 to 12 microns thick. Cheap hardware often runs 2 to 3 microns, sometimes zero. Without enough nickel, moisture reaches the base metal, and the plating lifts from underneath.

Surface preparation is the other hidden cost. Before plating, the part must be thoroughly degreased and acid-cleaned. Any oil or oxide left on the surface becomes a barrier between the metal and the plating. The chrome looks fine initially, but it is sitting on a contaminated surface. Within weeks of bathroom use, humidity and temperature changes cause that weak bond to separate. The plating blisters, then peels.

You can spot the warning signs before buying. Uneven color, especially yellowish patches near edges or recesses, means the plating thickness is inconsistent. A rough or cloudy surface suggests the polishing was rushed. Blistering around holes or threads indicates poor adhesion. None of these are visible in a product photo, which is why testing a sample in person matters for B2B buyers.
